A week before Marquez fight, Manny Pacquiao ‘ready to go’

LOS ANGELES — Manny Pacquiao came out of the Wild Card Gym Saturday looking like a kid who had just ransacked a candy store.

“Handang-handa na talaga,” a beaming Pacquiao told a group of Filipino writers a week before he faces Juan Manuel Marquez next week in Las Vegas.

Pacquiao engaged in a six-round sparring session and pleased trainer Freddie Roach, who labeled his No. 1 fighter as “explosive.”

Roach said Pacquiao will spar for about four rounds on Monday just before Team Pacquiao heads to Las Vegas.

Pacquiao and Roach are gunning for a knockout to silence everyone who have started to doubt Pacquiao’s motivation and level of competence.

“He’s ready to go,” said Roach.

Pacquiao said the final days will be devoted mainly on maintaining his current physical condition and Roach is optimistic that everything will turn out right come fight night.

“I am looking for a knockout but if it comes to a decision, I’d like it to to be a clear win for Manny. A close fight will be dangerous,” said Roach.

Pacquiao, who turns 34 on Dec. 17, holds two close wins over the 39-year-old Marquez. Their first fight end on a draw in 2004.

Team Pacquiao travels to Sin City on Monday.

The formal arrival rites will be held at the main lobby of the MGM Grand, while the official and final press conference will be on Wednesday. The weighin will be on Friday.

Paul Lee to return for Rain or Shine’s final game in eliminations

Paul Lee will return for Rain or Shine’s final assignment in the elimination round against Barako Bull, according to coach Yeng Guiao.

“That’s my intention,” said Guiao in an exclusive interview. “Parati naman siyang naka-suit up, pero ang question lang is kung kelan siya maglalaro. I intend to use him in our game against Barako Bull to prepare him for the playoffs.”

Lee, last season’s Rookie of the Year, has been joining the team’s practice sessions after recuperating from a shoulder injury he suffered in the last Governors’ Cup finals.

“Of course, there’s a difference between practice and actual game. Sa ensayo, iniingatan siya ng mga kakampi niya. Sa laro, teams will attack him and pounce on him,” said Guiao.
The Elasto Painters have recently welcomed another returning player, rookie Chris Tiu, who has played the team’s last two games.

Tiu is excited on the prospect of playing alongside Lee.

“I’m excited. What more can you ask for this team? This team really has strong character and I’m really proud to be part of this group,” said Tiu. “We’ve been playing good basketball, and I think we will be better if we have Paul Lee playing for our team.”
